Veneers are thin shells made of tooth coloured materials (either from porcelain or tooth-coloured plastic filling materials) that are custom made and bonded to your teeth to improve their appearance (changing the colour, shape, size or length).
If there is damage such as cracks, chips or gaps, porcelain veneers are the perfect solution to cosmetically and structurally improving the teeth. Porcelain veneers are usually made in the lab and are more resistant to staining compared to veneers made of tooth coloured filling material.
Before initiating the treatment for dental veneers, dentist will treat any other dental issues such as tooth decay, tooth grinding habits, gum diseases etc. During the process, dentist will trim the tooth a little to create space for veneers.
Impressions are taken and sent to the laboratory for their construction. Once fabricated, veneers are checked for their fit and color after which the teeth are cleaned, polished, etched and bonded with cement.
Composite veneers are made from tooth colored material bonded to the tooth structure. Correct shade is selected to match the tooth color and carefully placed directly on the tooth surface which is cured by special light to make it hard and bond to the tooth surface.
Composite veneers are easy to place and easy to repair. The advantage of composite veneers is they require less tooth structure to be removed compared to porcelain veneers.
